Difference between Active and Passive Components

The main difference between active and passive component.

  1. The components which require additional power supply for biasing the component for its operation are called active component. If the additional supply is not provided to active components, the active components remain inactive and do not function. The semiconductor components like BJT, IGBT, MOSFET, SCR, TRIAC are active components. Contrary to this, the passive components do not require additional power supply for its operation. The resistor,inductor and capacitor are the examples of passive components.

  2. Active component can amplify the signal thus they produce energy in the form of voltage or current.Therefore, the active components are used for small signal and large signal amplification. The inductor resist the change in the current and stores the energy in the form of magnetic field energy. Capacitor resist the change in the voltage and stores the energy in the form of electric field energy energy.Thus, these passive components stores the energy and transfer that energy from primary side to secondary side.

  3. The passive devices like resistor, inductor and capacitor draws the current in linear relationship with applied voltage. The current flowing through these devices linearly increase with increase of the voltage.The passive devices are also called linear devices. The passive components are also called ohmic devices because they follow Ohm's law. On the other hand, the active components does not draw current in the increased proportion of the voltage, and the active devices are called non linear devices. The active devices does not obey the ohm's law that is why these devices are also called non ohmic devices.

  4. Active devices are used for the amplification purpose.

  5. Flow of electrons or current through active device can be controlled by regulating biasing, whereas control of electrons is impossible in passive components.

  7. The passive components dissipates the energy in the form of heat, hence these are energy acceptor. The active components are used to amplify the signal, thus these devices donate energy and called energy donor.
